Established in 2000, the Long Island Gaels has a short but rich history. The club is mainly comprised of Irish American people who strive to promote Irish heritage and culture. One of the main sports they play is Gaelic (Irish) football. This is one of the oldest sports in the world. It is played on a field slightly larger than an American football field with fifteen players on each team. The playing format resembles a combination of soccer and American football. It is a fast-paced and entertaining game to watch. No heavy padding is required, shin guards are optional. At present the club has four underage teams; Under 8, Under 10, Under 12, and Under 14. They have players from the North Shore to the South Shore, from Huntington to Point Lookout. At present they are training and playing in Cedar Creek Park in Wantagh. They compete against twelve other clubs around the Tri-State area. Long Island Gaels are the only Gaelic football club on Long Island. They are looking to expand their program on the Island. If you have children in your area who may be interested, they will run a training session in your area. Scholarships and other promotions have also been discussed. The underage program is supported and sponsored by the Irish American Society, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Irish Americans in Government to name a few.
For those who feel energetic and are too old to play underage, they also have a Senior Gaelic Football team and a soccer team who are currently in training. You do not have to be a player to become a member of the club. Basic membership is $30 annually, family membership is $50 annually. Membership is open to all.
